The R Collective is on a passionate mission to create high quality clothes that you will love to live in. Together with our designers, we take great care at the product level to bring you the best possible garment. Because if the product’s not right, you won’t love it. Discover how we do it.
R Design and Production
It’s estimated that around 80% of a product's environmental impact is locked in at the design stage. To mitigate this, our uber talented sustainable designers use a range of sustainable design techniques, including zero waste, upcycling and reconstruction utilising waste materials, and our manufacturers utilise various smart sustainable systems, from recycling all cut and sew waste to top of the range wastewater treatment facilities, to ensure that our greatest impact is on you, and not the planet.
Globally it's estimated that the fashion industry generates 92 million tons of textile waste every year. We’re passionate about salvaging some of this. Our unrivalled access to reputable brands and manufacturers in Asia, the world’s manufacturing hotspot, means we can stop some high calibre unwanted fabrics, trims and accessories from being landfilled or incinerated. We’re very strict about which waste materials we upcycle; not only must they be top quality, but they must also be true ‘waste’. (So we don’t simply search the secondary textile market.)
It’s a beautiful solution: we put unwanted yet gorgeous quality materials back into the fashion system by creating covetable upcycled garments, instead of demanding that more virgin fabrics be created from the earth’s depleting natural resources. And our lifecycle carbon footprint analysis, from raw materials to factory, by partners RESET Carbon revealed that a typical upcycled R Collective jacket from our Trailblazer Collection has a 60% reduced carbon footprint, compared with a similar jacket created using virgin materials. Nice!
R Customer Use
It’s not just designers who can improve fashion - you can too! It’s estimated that 70-80% of a product’s negative environmental impact could arise from washing and drying alone. That’s mega! So we provide basic instructions on how to optimise your garment’s lifespan through improved care (https://www.thercollective.com/en/culture/care). We also offer a Repair and Take-back programme, so you can return our products for repair or recycling. And you can even rent, rather than buy, select pieces. See our FAQ guide on Empowering Customers (https://www.thercollective.com/en/frequently-asked-questions). Ultimately, we like to think of our customers as ‘fashion citizens’ instead of ‘fashion consumers’ as we’re not so keen on the Latin meaning of the word to consume, which is to destroy through use, being applied to beloved clothes!
